People should never discuss religion on Skytrains [Nov. 15th, 2006|01:42 pm]
Overheard in Transit

Okay. I'll set the scene for you.
Me and my friend Ben biteme2514 are coming home from North Van. We're minding our own business when this guy who looks slightly like my chem lab partner gets on the train. There's a girl in front of us sitting on her own, and the guy sits in front of her.
I'm watching him, cuz it looks like he's about to talk to her.
And he does.

"Excuse me, could I ask your opinion on something?"

Skytrain guy: "What do you think of Superman as a metaphor for Jesus?"

and at this point, I've slid down in my seat and pulled my scarf over my mouth to try and muffle my hysterical laugher.
Ben pulled his toque down over his face.

Innocent Bystander Chick: "Uh... I guess."
SG: "It's full of connections. Superman came back to life, so did Jesus... and when you think about it, the Smurfs are also a metaphor for communism."
IBC: "..."
me and Ben: "OMFG LOL" (but quieter)
SG: "They're all the same, and their leader is red. They share everything."
IBC: "...!"
SG: "...I take it you're not the chatty type."

The chick basically ignored him at this point. A few stops later she got off the train. It made me sad, because I wanted to tell her she was awesome for not laughing in his face.
The guy moved a seat back and kinda sat sideways and looked like he wanted to ask our opinion. Looks like we were hiding our laughter better than we thought.
So I started saying fuck a lot. See if I could scare away the odd boy.
I think it worked, because he looked across the aisle to some other girls and asked them the same thing.
SG: "Excuse me, could I ask your opinion on something?"
New Girl: "uh, sure."
SG: "What do you think of Superman as a metaphor for Jesus?"
NG: "I don't believe in god."
SG: "..."

He tried talking to the man in front of the girls, but was basically told to shut up because people don't like talking about religion in public, especially not to people they don't know.

The girl got off at 22nd Street with me and Ben, and I told her she had the best reaction to him. We filled her in on the last person he asked, and all came to the conclusion that Skytrain Guy was a few pews short of a church.

That sounds a lot like a guy I ran into on the street last Tuesday evening. He also insisted on telling me about what all the colours mean, and that H is actually a silent letter, so the word horse is actually or-se. And he had theories about why Brad Pitt was hot, and theories about seeing the light. So many weird things. He started talking about some superheroes a bit too. For about 45 minutes. I wish I had had a recording device with me.
